Redacting identity documents
A full copy of a passport or ID contains more personal data than is usually needed to rent a home. Storing it unnecessarily and sharing it with real estate agents or landlords is unsafe. You can read more about this on the Dutch government's website.
That is why Uprent automatically prepares a redacted copy when you upload an identity document to your profile.
What we redact
- personal identification numbers, such as a BSN or Social Security number;
- the document number;
- the photo;
- the signature;
- the machine-readable zone (MRZ).
The MRZ consists of two or three lines of letters, numbers, and symbols at the bottom of a passport or ID. It is designed for automatic scanning and repeats the holder's personal data, including their name, document number, nationality, date of birth, and expiration date.
How it works
- The system detects the orientation of each page and rotates the document if needed.
- AI finds areas where personal data remains.
- Uprent places black rectangles over these areas. This is no longer done by AI: our system creates the final redacted document.
- The system compresses the document so it is easier to store and send by email.
